The Black Rock Branch Library is a full service facility providing a wide range of library services to the diverse and vibrant community in the Black Rock section of Bridgeport, CT. First opened in 1932, the Black Rock Branch has recently undergone major renovations. Reopened in July of 2009, the library has been expanded from its original 6,000 square feet to 11,000 square feet. Additionally, the entire facility has been modernized, with the installation of 12 public access computers, free Wi-Fi throughout the building and the construction of two large program rooms and a smaller conference room.
The library’s beautiful ceiling mural was done by Connecticut artist Sasha Shatlan.
Since reopening, the library has become a hub for the community. Circulation of all materials and library card registration has been very high. Children, teens and adults are now making a visit to the library a regular, often times daily, part of their lives.
In addition to providing books, AV materials and computer access, the Black Rock Branch also offers a wide range of programs for all ages. Regular story hours and class visits for children, ESL classes, and Medicare workshops for seniors are just a few examples of programs recently held at the library. Book club meetings, technology classes and one-on-one sessions, crafts and more are all hosted regularly throughout each month.
The Black Rock Branch Library has also become the home for several community groups which now hold their regular meetings at the library. Additionally, the library has worked with neighborhood organizations, schools and local businesses to support the community with many amazing local events- you can find us at the Black Rock Parade, the Black Rock Farmer’s Market, helping at Trunk-or-Treats, and hosting great seasonal celebrations such as our annual visit with Santa and Mrs. Claus and our spring visit from the Easter Bunny!
This type of partnership with our community is central to the mission of Bridgeport Public Library system. Together, we will continue to build one of the premier community libraries in Connecticut.
