Title:
Lighthouse on Grottan Sound, U.S. Gunboats passing - February 7, 1862
Scope & Content:
Once the troops left Annapolis, they had a relatively easy and direct route south on the Chesapeake Bay and down to Cape Hatteras on the Outer Banks where they could enter the sound and approach important, strategic locations on land like New Bern and Fort Macon. This lighthouse is a unique shape characteristic of the mid-Atlantic and southeastern coasts.
