This series of sketches depicts the bombardment by Union forces of a dirt fort constructed by the Confederates on Roanoke Island, land strategically bounded by the Croatan and Roanoke Sounds. Here, soldiers can be seen marching in formation on the land surrounding Burnside's headquarters. A flag flies from the roof of the house while tents are pitched nearby.
