The Circus Poster Collection : Barnum in the late 1800s
Title:
Houssa-Bora-Sam - a supernatural equipoise and balancing exhibition by a troupe of Japanese equilibrists
Scope & Content:
A male figure in red short pants and a yellow shirt demonstrates a variety of gymnastic and acrobatic feats using bamboo poles and platforms. Houssa Bora Sam’s portrait appears in a globe-like format that is being held up by the feet of a male figure. An East Asian landscape and pagoda can be seen in the background. The Japanese equilibrist is billed as possessing a “supernatural equipoise” and “extraordinary agility and strength.”

This poster is one of many fine examples of circus posters printed by the Strobridge Lithograph Company of Cincinnati in the early 1880s when American entrepreneur and cultural icon P.T. Barnum first negotiated the merger of his circus to form "P.T. Barnum's and Great London Combined."
