The Circus Poster Collection : Barnum in the late 1800s
Title:
Gilfort Brothers in their marvelous, indescribable and extraordinary exhibitions of strength
Scope & Content:
Multiple figures of the Gilfort Brothers, William and Robert depict the men lifting enormously heavy objects, including barrels loaded with water, and performing various feats of strength and agility. They are performing in a large room with rounded walls and gymnastics mat in the center. Text in the lower center states that the acts depicted "are genuine" and that "close inspection is earnestly invited."

This poster is one of many fine examples of circus posters printed by the Strobridge Lithograph Company of Cincinnati in the early 1880's when American entrepreneur and cultural icon P.T. Barnum first negotiated the merger of his circus to form "P.T. Barnum's and Great London Combined."
