The Circus Poster Collection : Barnum in the late 1800s
Title:
The original and only LuLu - the human meteor
Scope & Content:
A portrait of a man appears in the upper, left corner while a picture below shows the same men dressed in a woman's leotard with a lacy placket and collar. An interior scene of a massive circus tent appears at the center. A large catapult drawn by horses has shot the performer high into the air, a feat accentuated by the depiction of the tent poles roof and the distance of the audience below. On the lower, right is a picture of the performer wearing a woman's dress. The text below claims that "this marvelous artist" has attained a height of "200 feet through space."

This poster is one of many fine examples of circus posters printed by the Strobridge Lithograph Company of Cincinnati in the early 1880's when American entrepreneur and cultural icon P.T. Barnum first negotiated the merger of his circus to form "P.T. Barnum's and Great London Combined."
