The Circus Poster Collection : Barnum in the late 1800s
Title:
William Dutton - Equestrian
Scope & Content:
"The undisputed bareback champion of equestrianism" is depicted in multiple scenarios. Wearing red short pants and boots, Dutton is shown standing on a running horse in various poses and performing a somersault over the back of a running horse. The ring and stands of crowds appear in the background. He is said to "combine the beauty and grace of an Apollo." A large, oval shaped portrait of Dutton sits in the middle of the poster.

This poster is one of many fine examples of circus posters printed by the Strobridge Lithograph Company of Cincinnati in the early 1880's when American entrepreneur and cultural icon P.T. Barnum first negotiated the merger of his circus to form "P.T. Barnum's and Great London Combined."
