The Circus Poster Collection : Barnum in the late 1800s
Title:
Trio of full-grown ostriches
Scope & Content:
A young woman in a blue skirt, red boots, and a tiara adorned with ostrich feathers, drives a fancifully decorated cart led by two large ostriches. A boy in a blue shirt and red turban rides an ostrich with a harness behind her. A palace like building with onion domes stands to the back right and a crowd of men and women stand on the building's steps observing the scene. Palm trees and mountains appear in the landscape. The text below states that "the trio of ostriches" with their marvelously rich plumage," can be observed in the "most brilliant, free street display" ever seen.

This poster is one of many fine examples of circus posters printed by the Strobridge Lithograph Company of Cincinnati in the early 1880's when American entrepreneur and cultural icon P.T. Barnum first negotiated the merger of his circus to form "P.T. Barnum's and Great London Combined."
