The Circus Poster Collection : Barnum in the late 1800s
Title:
The only aviary of feathered giants
Scope & Content:
A variety of large-sized birds is seen on the shore on a body of water with mountains in the background. At the bottom center two white birds feed each other as another bird of prey swoops down. Ostriches and emus stand on each side and swans swim in the background. In the text at the lower right "Prodigious pelicans" and "flaming flamingos" are billed as just some of "winged wonders" that can be seen at the circus.

This poster is one of many fine examples of circus posters printed by the Strobridge Lithograph Company of Cincinnati in the early 1880s when American entrepreneur and cultural icon P.T. Barnum first negotiated the merger of his circus to form "P.T. Barnum's and Great London Combined."
