Title:
Bivouac of the 8th Regiment, Connecticut Volunteers, before the battle - New Bern, North Carolina - March 15, 1862
Scope & Content:
This image is the first rendering of a location south of Roanoke Island. Corporal Shadek depicted New Bern, North Carolina, numerous times in his sketchbook. Toward the end of the sketchbook, a "landscape" painting is included with "Newbern on Fire, after the Battle, March 14th, 1862." New Bern, NC, was the site of fierce fighting between Union and Confederate forces and Union troops occupied the city for the remainder of the war. It was at this location in North Carolina that Shadek's Company A. suffered its first casualties.
