The Circus Poster Collection : Barnum in the late 1800s
Title:
Zazel - the beautiful human cannon ball
Scope & Content:
A man in military style uniform stands at the lower left lighting a golden, "huge siege cannon" shooting Zazel, dressed in short pants trimmed with lace, 100 feet into the air inside a large tent with audiences seated in the background. Several vignettes of the female performer walking a tight rope while holding a parasol high above the ground appear at the top. A large net stretches across the center floor. A portrait of Zazel with flowers in her hair is at the lower right

This poster is one of many fine examples of circus posters printed by the Strobridge Lithograph Company of Cincinnati in the early 1880s when American entrepreneur and cultural icon P.T. Barnum first negotiated the merger of his circus to form "P.T. Barnum's and Great London Combined."
