Burn Baby Burn: The Politics of Urban Riots, a lecture by historian Britney Murphy

Burn Baby Burn: The Politics of Urban Riots, a lecture by historian Britney Murphy

Saturday, May 21
11:00 am – 12:00 pm, 3rd floor Community Room

UCONN historian Britney Murphy tells the history of urban America, and Bridgeport, through the perspective of the “riot.” She argues that uncontrolled and unlawful acts of collective violence are an unavoidable byproduct of urban living. Cities, as centers of commerce, politics, and population diversity, are powder kegs in which contests over power periodically erupt into violence.

Virtual: Mindfulness A Balanced Introduction with C. Pierce Salguero

Virtual: Mindfulness A Balanced Introduction with C. Pierce Salguero

The past few decades have seen the emergence of the “Mindfulness Revolution” in mainstream American popular culture. Hospitals, prisons, daycare centers, college campuses … mindfulness meditation is seemingly everywhere these days. In fact, since the inception of Buddhism nearly 2500 years ago, Buddhists have understood various facets of their tradition to be sources of health and healing. But how established are the links between meditation and physical health? Dr. Salguero will give an overview of the history, contemporary practice, and academic study of mindfulness meditation practice. He will situate the contemporary focus on the health benefits of meditation within the global history of Buddhism and medicine, and will outline the many rich and complex Buddhist approaches to healing that have been (and still are) used globally, and will suggest directions for further historical and clinical research beyond meditation.

C. Pierce Salguero is a transdisciplinary humanities scholar who is fascinated by the historical and contemporary intersections between Buddhism, medicine, and cross-cultural exchange. He has a PhD in the history of medicine from the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine (2010) and teaches Asian history, medicine, and religion at Penn State University’s Abington College, located near Philadelphia. He is the author of many books on the history and practice of Buddhism and Asian medicine including the newly released Buddhish: A Guide to the 20 Most Important Buddhist Ideas for the Curious and Skeptical.

ALL OF THE MARVELS: Journey into the Marvel Comics Universe with Douglas Wolk

ALL OF THE MARVELS: Journey into the Marvel Comics Universe with Douglas Wolk

Author Douglas Wolk will discuss his new book “All of the Marvels: Journey into the Marvel Comics Universe.” The first-ever full reckoning with Marvel Comics’ interconnected, half-million-page story, a revelatory guide to the “epic of epics”—and to the past sixty years of American culture—from a beloved authority on the subject who read all 27,000+ Marvel superhero comics and lived to tell the tale.

RSVP for Zoom link: bit.ly/3yGqGxA

The superhero comic books that Marvel Comics has published since 1961 are, as Douglas Wolk notes, the longest continuous, self-contained work of fiction ever created: over half a million pages to date, and still growing. The Marvel story is a gigantic mountain smack in the middle of contemporary culture. Thousands of writers and artists have contributed to it. Everyone recognizes its protagonists: Spider-Man, the Avengers, the X-Men. Eighteen of the hundred highest-grossing movies of all time are based on parts of it. Yet not even the people telling the story have read the whole thing—nobody’s supposed to. So, of course, that’s what Wolk did: he read all 27,000+ comics that make up the Marvel Universe thus far, from Alpha Flight to Omega the Unknown. And then he made sense of it—seeing into the ever-expanding story, in its parts and as a whole, and seeing through it, as a prism through which to view the landscape of American culture. In Wolk’s hands, the mammoth Marvel narrative becomes a fun-house-mirror history of the past sixty years, from the atomic night terrors of the Cold War to the technocracy and political division of the present day—a boisterous, tragicomic, magnificently filigreed epic about power and ethics, set in a world transformed by wonders. As a work of cultural exegesis, this is sneakily significant, even a landmark; it’s also ludicrously fun. This is a huge treat for Marvel fans, but it’s also a revelation for readers who don’t know Doctor Strange from Doctor Doom. Here, truly, are all of the marvels.
