{"id":530,"date":"2011-01-18T17:42:25","date_gmt":"2011-01-18T17:42:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/demo.fredib.com\/wordpress3\/?p=530"},"modified":"2011-01-18T17:42:25","modified_gmt":"2011-01-18T17:42:25","slug":"fanny-crosby","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bportlibrary.org\/hc\/heroes-and-villains\/fanny-crosby\/","title":{"rendered":"Fanny Crosby"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Fanny Crosby, whose formal name was Francis Van Alstyne, was one of the corner stones of Bridgeport and a beacon for Bridgeport women.<\/p>\n<p>Her creative ingenuity inspired people all over the world, and her songs have been sung by generations of church-goers.<\/p>\n<p>As early as age 8, Crosby began to write poems.\u00a0 She attended the New York Institute for the Blind, where she eventually taught.\u00a0 When she was still a teacher, an 18-year old named Grover Cleveland, who also was employed at the school, worked with Crosby in transcribing her poems.\u00a0 Cleveland was later elected President of the United States.<\/p>\n<p>By age 24, Crosby had her first book of poems published.\u00a0 She went on to write songs and hymns&#8211;more than 8,000 of them.\u00a0 Many of her hymns are still sung, such as &#8220;Safe in the Arms of Jesus,&#8221; and &#8220;Blessed Assurance.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The following words, written when she was 8 years old, sum up Crosby&#8217;s positive outlook on life that inspired many:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Oh, what a happy soul I am,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> although I cannot see!<\/em><br \/>\n<em> I am resolved that in this world<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Contented I will be.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>How many blessings I enjoy<\/em><br \/>\n<em> That other people don&#8217;t.<\/em><br \/>\n<em> To weep and sigh because I&#8217;m blind<\/em><br \/>\n<em> I cannot, and I won&#8217;t!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Fanny Crosby died in 1915\u00a0at the age of 94.\u00a0\u00a0 She is buried in Mountain Grove Cemetery in Bridgeport.\u00a0 She is considered one of the most prolific hymn writers\u00a0of the 20th century.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Fanny Crosby, whose formal name was Francis Van Alstyne, was one of the corner stones of Bridgeport and a beacon for Bridgeport women.
