The COVID-19 Journal Project \u2013 A Bridgeport History Center Initiative

Back in March of this year, the Bridgeport History Center announced the COVID-19 Journal Project – an initiative dedicated to capturing the pandemic\u2019s impact on everyday life in Bridgeport.\u00a0 \u00a0 The project has now entered its second phase: collecting all the journals that you\u2019ve created!<\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>Starting RIGHT NOW the Bridgeport History Center is accepting your COVID-19 journal, no matter the format!\u00a0 Did you write it on the computer?\u00a0 By hand?\u00a0 Make a vlog?\u00a0 Scrapbook?\u00a0 We\u2019re ready and waiting with open arms.<\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>The process is simple!<\/span><\/p>\n

1. Get in touch with us by going to our contact page<\/a> and selecting \u201cCOVID-19 Journal Project\u201d from the drop down menu. \u00a0 Let us know who you are and what format your journal is in.\u00a0 (Paper, a MS word document, etc.)<\/span><\/p>\n

2. We\u2019ll reply as soon as we\u2019re able with information on how to send us your journal <\/span>and<\/span><\/i> a deed of gift form.\u00a0 This form confirms that you\u2019re giving us your journal, and will include an option to restrict public access to the journal for 5, 20, or 30 years.<\/p>\n

3. <\/span>Mail us the journal!\u00a0 We\u2019ll let you know when we receive it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

4. Be proud of yourself.\u00a0 You\u2019ve helped explain this chaotic time to future generations.\u00a0 <\/span>

\n<\/span>If you\u2019re not comfortable with letting go of your journal yet, or are seeing this announcement for the first time and feel like you have some writing to do, don\u2019t worry.\u00a0 Work at your own pace, and we’ll be here for you.<\/p>\n

Only learning about this project now?\u00a0 Welcome aboard! \u00a0Below <\/span>are some general guidelines for a quarantine journal but there are no particular rules to what to include.\u00a0 If your kids are absolutely dying for something to do, encourage them to do their own version of a journal too!\u00a0 Get creative.<\/p>\n

Quarantine journal guidelines:<\/strong><\/p>\n

1. Decide how you will create your journal.\u00a0 Writing it down?\u00a0 A document in MS Word or Gdocs?\u00a0 Video diaries? Audio? Photos only?\u00a0\u00a0 We\u2019ll take all formats!<\/p>\n

2. In your first entry, tell us just a little bit about yourself.\u00a0 You don\u2019t have to give your full name, but a name is good, your age, and anything else you want people to know.<\/p>\n

3. Include whatever you\u2019d like from there.\u00a0 Talk about how you\u2019re spending your days \u2013 are you working from home?\u00a0 Are you on the frontlines as a healthcare worker or deemed an essential employee?\u00a0 Tell us about how your life has changed and what your daily routine is like.\u00a0 If you\u2019re taking care of your children, we want to know how you\u2019re helping them. If you\u2019re keeping your journal as a digital file, copy\/paste good memes that are making you laugh.\u00a0 (Yes, future historians are going to be studying memes.\u00a0 Help them do it!)\u00a0 Photos of your current craft project.\u00a0 Your list of what you\u2019ve already watched on Netflix.\u00a0 Videos of your quarantine walks.\u00a0 Whatever gets you through this moment.
\nNOTE:<\/strong> If you\u2019re worried about material being accessed immediately after you donate it, don\u2019t be!\u00a0 We can put a \u201cdo not read until after\u2026\u201d condition on your journal.<\/p>\n

4. Keep going until we\u2019re out on the other side!<\/p>\n

5. Donate!\u00a0\u00a0 Use our contact form<\/a> and mark it as \u201cdonations\u201d so we can work with you and figure out the details. To get an idea of what donating to an archive is like, this guide from the Society of American Archivists will help you out.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Great Plague 1665-1666: How did London respond to it?<\/a> from the National Archives in the UK is an educator\u2019s guide to using diaries and personal documents from the Great Plague to help understand what it was like to live during that time.\u00a0 Your journal will help do the same.<\/p>\n

The Great Diary Project<\/a> gives an excellent overview of why diaries and journals are so important for historians!<\/p>\n
