Oral history interview with Karin Smith, co-owner of the Kindred Thoughts bookstore in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Kindred Thoughts is Bridgeport's only bookstore with an emphasis on African American literature and cultural events
Smith discusses her family background and her early years in Bridgeport as well as the time she spent in Southern California. Smith attended Bullard Havens technical high school in Bridgeport for a brief period. As a youth, she played a significant role in caring for her grandparents when she was not in school. She has had a long career in the health care industry, holding positions with chiropractors, HMOs, and IT firms. She comments on the state of the city and its development compared to other Connecticut cities.
Smith has a life long love of books and reading. She discusses bookstores that have operated in Bridgeport, going to the library, and especially her inspiration and vision for her own business, Kindred Thoughts, an independent bookstore located in the Arcade building in Bridgeport's downtown.
