Mancala and a Movie
Make your own Mancala game. Considered chess of the East, Mancala derives its name from the Arabic word naqala “to move” and plays a role in both African and Asian cultures. Participants will create their own mancala game, learn the rules and be able to play at home.
Following the craft there will be a showing of the award winning Weston Woods movie Jazztime. Set in Harlem in 1919, two girls – one white, one black – form a lifelong friendship through a chance encounter and the jazztime music of young “Fats” Waller.. Screenplay by Maxine Fisher. Black History Program.
This program will be offered at the Newfield Branch, on Feb. 16, at 4 p.m.; and the Black Rock Branch, on Feb. 23, at 1 p.m.
On Feb. 15, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m., the Old Mill Green Branch, will offer visitors to opportunity to make their own mancala game.
